MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO LIVING LAB

Madonna di Campiglio is the Italian Living Lab of the European project Smart Altitude. We are testing an Integrated Energy Management System to improve energy efficiency, optimize the use of water, integrate renewable energy sources and reduce CO2 emissions in the SkiArea. Our mission is to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2026, the year of the XXV Winter Olympic Games hosted in Italy.

ACTIVITIES

Piattaforma

INTEGRATED ENERGY MANAGEMENT

We are monitoring ski lift operations, specifically the consumption of energy and water to support eco-sustainable decisions.

Lago Montagnoli

MONITORING LAKE MONTAGNOLI

We are analyzing the thermal behavior of the Montagnoli lake to improve the use of water in the snow making process.

EUROPEAN PROJECT

Smart Altitude is a European project that aims at implementing new tools to improve the use of energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Alpine ski areas. The project develops new decision making tools for ski operators and policy makers and innovative technical solutions to be tested in three living labs.

LIVING LABS

The Madonna di Campiglio Living Lab in Italy explores the potential of an Integrated Energy Management System, from process optimization to a comprehensive territorial strategy.

The Krvavec Living Lab in Slovenia tests a multi-energy reduction approach on snowmaking processes, ski lifts and heating.

Les Orres’ Living Lab in France tests a demand and production balancing system, based on user involvement with an ‘energy management service’ and a self-production/consumption approach optimizing local renewables.

PARTNERS

LOCAL PARTNERS
The local partner of the Smart Altitude project are Funivie Madonna di Campiglio S.p.A., Trentino Sviluppo and Fondazione Bruno Kessler. By sharing knowledge and expertise in the industry, territorial economy and research sectors, they collaborate to develop a new model for sustainable energy management in mountain ski areas.

EUROPEAN PARTNERS
Smart Altitude involves eleven partners from six different countries over the Alpine Space with the common goal of applying innovative solutions and technologies to optimize energy and water consumption in sustainable mountain territories.

INTEGRATED ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Piattaforma

WHAT IS IT?
It is a digital platform for monitoring the mountain environment and the ski infrastructure
WHAT DOES IT DO?
It monitors lift operations and the consumption of energy water.
It generates report, sends notifications and make forecasts on the energy consumption of the ski area.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
It provides integrated data and information on the entire ski are and the mountain environment that can support ski managers in taking eco-sustainable decisions .
WHAT DOES IT MONITOR?
It monitors and integrates data coming from seven different sources:
1.  Electric grid: data on energy consumption from the medium voltage grid
2.  Snow production: data on the quantity of water used, compressed air and energy consumption
3.  Lake monitoring: data on water temperatures and water surface level of the Montagnoli lake
4.  Snow grooming: operational data on diesel consumption and snow-depth
5.  Meteo: data on metereological conditions and weather forecasts
6.  Ski lifts: data on energy usage, number of entrances and potential for photovoltaic integration
7.  Skier data: data on the skier days

MONITORING LAKE MONTAGNOLI

Lago Montagnoli

WHAT IS IT?
It is a set of hi-tech sensors installed in the artificial lake that feeds the snow production system.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
It gathers data on water temperature at different depths, water surface and meteorological conditions.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
It provides data to optimize the artificial snow production process through energy and water savings and heat recovery.
