It's one of the oldest and most extensive natural parks in Italy. Since 1935, the year in which it was established, the Stelvio National Park protects the marvelous features of the alpine valleys, as well as the plants and animals that are within a vast protected nature area surrounded by the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano and the Lombardy region.

The River Park, which naturally and ecologically connects the Stelvio National Park to the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, protects highly important nature sites like the European Union Natura 2000 nature protection areas, peat bogs, alder woods, wetlands, fields, pastures and cultivated areas.
